Back at his house, Colin sat on the floor of his living room with an acoustic guitar across his muscular legs. I sat behind him, one leg draped over his and my head resting on the center of his back. As he sang a song I didn’t recognize, I could feel the low rumble of his voice vibrate through his back and into me. I closed my eyes and slowly breathed in his scent of fresh laundry and good-smelling-man, pulling it to the bottom of my lungs and let it linger there.

He feels so good.

My hands stroked down his sides as I listened to the soulful music roll out of him. Colin’s corded forearms flexed and rippled as his fingers moved over the guitar strings. I tried like hell to ignore the tiny hiccup beneath my breastbone. The gravel in his voice filled me with heat but it was more. Colin had always worn his heart on his sleeve, and I didn’t know how to do that.

This man was an experience, and he checked all my boxes:

Playful: check.

Kind: check.

Successful: check.

Sexy as fuck: double check.

Over his shoulder I saw a framed picture of him, Decker, and Linc as teenagers, dressed in football uniforms with the joy of a victory painted on their youthful faces. Colin was in the center, his hair was longer, flopped over one eye in the front, but his lopsided grin was just as endearing then as it was now. His arms stretched open to pull his best friends into a hug. Linc looked serious as ever, and Decker’s warmth was apparent, even then. My heart tumbled a little harder for the man I was wrapped around, and the rest of the guys.

Colin hummed his way through the bridge of the song he was playing.

“Forget the words, big shot?” I teased, keeping my voice just above a whisper.

Colin harrumphed. “Haven’t written them yet.”

“You wrote that?” I paused and blinked once, emotion thick in my throat. “Colin. It’s beautiful.”

He turned his body to angle it toward me. “Thanks, darlin’.” His lips met mine in a soft, sensuous kiss. “It’s special and I’m glad you like it.”

“There’s not much you do that I don’t like,” I countered, kissing him again and squeezing him with my arms and legs in a bear hug.

A heavy sigh I didn’t know I was holding left my lungs in a whoosh. “So we’re really doing this?” I toyed with my bottom lip, unable to look him in the eye.

Colin tipped my chin with his finger, gently forcing my eyes to meet his. “Baby, I have never been so sure of anything in my entire life.”

His hand spread to the side of my face, and I leaned into him, allowing him to cradle it as I closed my eyes and soaked in the moment.

“Honey, you aren’t just some girl. When you’re here, in my home, I can feel it. Every part of me knows it. I’m just waiting for you to catch up.”

The knocking behind my ribs was deafening—it was a wonder Colin couldn’t hear it too.
